Plate 1a OJ (enormous margins) affixed to reverse of an entire

Plate 1a OJ (enormous margins) affixed to reverse of an entire

Plate 1a OJ, margins all round (enormous on two sides) affixed to reverse of an entire to Horsley Down in the manner of a seal. The Post Office clerk did not realise or ignored it as it was contrary to regulation & applied a hand struck '2' charge in black with faint 'T.P/Borough' in red adjacent - over struck on/by a red Maltese Cross & presumably indicating that the adhesive had now been noticed/accepted for payment & therefore the 2d charge was cancelled. The adhesive itself tied by very fine strike of the red Maltese Cross (possibly in a different shade from the strike on the other side) & showing superb London 9 May 1840 d/stamp, some minor creasing & small part of address panel missing though in no way detracting from this attractive, unusual & rare combination of May date & contrary to regulation usage.
