1844 (7 Oct) entire from Lancaster to Hawkshead bearing a fresh looking 1841 1d which clearly shows a faint black Maltese Cross underneath the '436' numeral, the adhesive affixed using red sealing wax. The stamp was accepted for postage apparently without the fraud being noticed or identified. Very few covers known & the vast majority of these come from evidence held by the courts or police after trial - those that slipped through, such as this example are of course much more rare. Fine & very attractive. £750.00 N/S

1847 (6th March) cover from Wolverhampton to Birmingham bearing 1d red brown with Mechanical separation, tied by '905' obliterator for Wolverhampton. Note - the machine that cut this stamp was probably that known as the 'Postage Stamp Conveniencer' shown at the 1851 International Exhibition. Due to insufficient control, sheets tended to slip resulting in miscut stamps. Brandon Cert (2007) £700.00 £700.00

1848 (3 Jan) entire letter from Beith bearing a soiled & defective 1841 1d, which obviously shows signs of previous use. It was not accepted for postage & shows a black hand struck '2' with red ink manuscript 'Old Stamp' alongside; some cover faults otherwise fine & most appealing. Very few of these covers known as they were usually destroyed by the Post Office or police after a trial. £750.00 N/S
