Stamp auction - 10 March 2011
(realised prices)
|
Dear Customer
Welcome to our latest auction (Sale 163) initially scheduled for May then postponed owing to the pandemic. Now that lockdown has eased we can go ahead with our sale at the Britannia Hotel over two days instead of one
which will help us abide by the social distancing rules.
Viewing
We have taken two extra days at the hotel before the auction for viewing, which again will help with social distancing; we would recommend this as the best option.
If you wish to view the auction lots at our Newcastle offices you can do so from Monday 10th to Friday 21st August (weekdays) by appointment only.
Please ensure you bring a face mask/covering with you. Gloves will be provided and these must be worn at all times during viewing.
Attending the sale
If you are attending the auction in person, face masks/coverings must be worn.
When planning your journey, please bear in mind this sale is live on the internet and we generally achieve a rate of 200 lots per hour.
If you are feeling anxious about attending the sale, you can, as always, send your bids by post or email before the sale to be added to the book or you can bid live through Easylive Auctions. Easylive offer a
great option of a £3 flat fee, which allows you to bid on as many lots as you like with no other charges.
Bidding
Unfortunately we will be unable to offer our usual room bidder (boxed) lots which always prove to be popular with many of you.
The auction room numbers will be limited (maximum of 30 people). Therefore, we ask that bidders move in and out of the room accordingly. We understand customers may wish to bid on multiple lots but if
there is a space between your lot numbers please leave the room until ready to bid again.
Refreshments
Owing to regulations we are unable to provide our usual tea/coffee and sandwiches. However, customers can order from the main reception area of the hotel.
If you would like any other information regarding our sale please do not hesitate to contact us. Corbitts would like to thank you for your continued support.
|
Don't forget to also take a look at our online shop. Now open with well over 1000 items available for immediate purchase. Please note that items from this auction are not included in our online shop stock.

HENRY TUCK'S PIONEER ENVELOPE from Glasgow to London with adhesive Pl. 5 OC placed over the flap & tied by two black MC's. Stamp has been used as a seal & torn vertically when envelope was opened. Patent details inside the envelope. The Railway Times Newspaper November 21st, 1840 reports... TUCK'S HERMETIC ENVELOPES, on an entirely new plan (Manufactured by Machinery and registered pursuant to Act of Parliament) offer advantages possessed by no other letter cover yet devised. The Postage Stamp Label is affixed to the envelope in such a manner as to serve at once to seal and frank the letter. Separate waxing or wafering rendered unnecessary. Time in making up and dispatching less than the before introduction of the Penny Postage system. All envelopes hitherto made on the old plan may be easily opened without breaking the seal, their contents read or abstracted and the envelope re-placed in its original state, so as to defy detection. But this cannot be done with the HEMETIC ENVELOPES, which renders them invaluable for the enclosure of Bills of Exchange, Remittances, Confidential Communications, Legal & Official Documents etc. May be had at the office, 122 Fleet Street, in quantities of not less than 250 of various sizes, in neat paper boxes, from 10s to 15s per 1000, and of all stationers in the kingdom. Orders also received at 138 Aldergate Street. This example bears Glasgow & London c.d.s's on reverse & contains original letter regarding a legal claim. Apparently only two of these are thought to exist. Very rare.
