James Chalmers: Essay in red on white in a horizontal strip of three on gummed paper, the end stamp with printed pmk 'DUNDEE/10th February, 1838' the frame constructed of hollow diamonds with central dots with circles in corners. In 1837 Chalmers wrote to Robert Wallace the well known Postal Reformer with a suggestion for what he terrmed SLIPS to indicate the pre-payment of postage. To prevent the SLIPS being used twice, Postmasters should put the town stamp accross the SLIP. A version of his design was also printed in the Post Circular. These essays were reprinted on a few occasions the earlier types have no dots in the diamonds that make the borders. This strip was probably issued in the 1880's (Ex. Chartwell) £250 to 300 £430.00
