Pl. 1a OJ margins all round (enormous on two sides) affixed to the reverse of an entire to Horsley Down in the manner of a seal. The post office clerk either did not realise or ignored it as it was contrary to regulation & applied a hand struck '2' charge in black with faint 'T.P/Borough' in red adjacent - over struck on/by a red Maltese Cross & presumably indicating that the adhesive had now been noticed/accepted for payment & therefore the 2d charge was cancelled. The adhesive itself tied by very fine strike of the red Maltese Cross (possibly in a different shade from the strike on the other side) & showing superb red London 9 May 1840 date stamp; some minor creasing & small part of address panel missing though in no way detracting from this attractive, unusual & rare combination of May date & contrary to regulations usage.
